Πάντα επίκαιρες στο λόγο τους, οι ‘Σημειώσεις για τη διαχείριση του πανικού’ του Δημοσιοϋπαλληλικού Ρετιρέ επανεκδόθηκαν το 2016 φέρνοντας το συγκρότημα πιο κοντά σε νέα αυτιά και μια νέα γενιά ακροατών. Με μια sui-generis κριτική ματιά στη μουσική και στα πράγματα, κάθε νέα ακρόαση δίνει ανάσες ελευθερίας αλλά και θέτει αναπάντεχες ερωτήσεις και ιδέες. Ξέρει κανείς τι συνέβη τελικά με τα μάρμαρα του Παρθενώνα; Πόσα προβλήματα ξεκινούν από την κακή χρήση της γλώσσας; Οι στραγγαλιστές στα σχολεία…

Το καυστικό χιούμορ τους μας ζωντάνεψε και η αιχμηρή ματιά τους έδωσε δύναμη και ανακούφιση σε πολλούς. Η μουσική από την άλλη μας άγγιξε, εκτιμήθηκε, και -γιατί όχι- χορεύτηκε κιόλας. Το βινύλιο όμως εξαντλήθηκε. Καθώς περιμένουμε υπομονετικά περισσότερο υλικό να επανέλθει στην επιφάνεια, ξανατυπώσαμε το πρώτο δίσκο ώστε να μη λείψει από κανέναν μας. Άλλωστε, όπως σημειώνει η Δανάη Στεφάνου, εδώ έχουμε όχι απλά μια μουσική, αλλά έναν “οδηγό επιβίωσης σε συνθήκες εγχώριας δυστοπίας”. Για να παραμείνουμε δημιουργικοί όμως, θα προτιμήσουμε να το δούμε καλύτερα ως “διαχρονικό ηχητικό τεκμήριο για τη σημασία μιας αυτοσχέδιας καθημερινότητας”.

Still relevant after all these years, Dimosioypalliliko Retire’s ‘On the Administration of Panic’ was first reissued in 2016, bringing the band closer to new ears and to a new generation of listeners. With a sui-generis critical approach to both music and the everyday, each new listen offers breaths of fresh air but also raises unforeseen questions. Does anyone know what happened to the Parthenon Marbles in the end? How many problems start with the misuse of language? Stranglers belong to schools…

Their caustic humour brightened us up, and their sharp gaze gave strength and relief to many. The music on the other hand touched us, and somewhat unexpectedly some of it even managed to move a few bodies on a dancefloor or two. But the LP sold out. As we patiently wait for more of the band’s material to come back to the surface, we repressed the first album so that no one would miss it. Besides, as Danae Stefanou notes, what we have here is not just music, but a "survival guide in conditions of domestic dystopia". To stay positive, however, we would rather see it as "timeless sonic evidence of the importance of an improvised everyday life."

Dimosioypalliliko Retire 1984-2006
The group Dimosioypalliliko Retire (translates to “Public Sector Worker Penthouse”) was formed in 1984 by Ntanis Tragopoulos, Alexandra Katsiani and Thanasis Chondros. It was initially active in live performances and subsequently with recordings, up until 2006 where it completed its course. In essence D.R. involved itself in a radical application of the era’s modes of expression and media, in manners that were particularly edifying, paradoxical and humorous. Their appearances were centred on performance art, with music appearing sometimes in the foreground and other times in a supporting role. The result itself was often closer to the features of a school play or a debased news broadcast, rather than a music concert. D.R.’s first appearance took place in an unfinished building site in Thessaloniki (October 1984), and other appearances followed in venues such as farmer’s markets, parks, university halls and political youth festivals.
